How To Tease Your Hair Tutorial

Very Vintage Vibe Review

Hi Ladies! 

Here's another fabulous review of one of my favorite pinterest finds. 

Today my model is my beautiful sister-in-law Mallory Key! Mal, is neither a model or a hairstylist, she's a Second Grade Teacher. :)

The tutorial I'm reviewing is called the Very Vintage Vibe: 50's Inspired Ponytail and can be found at The Beauty Department. 

Just as a refresher or encase you're new to Scottie'sPaperDolls I have my non-hairstylist friends attempt the online tutorials with no help from me (a hairstylist). If the tutorial turns out like the picture than it's a good tutorial! If it doesn't turn out correctly, then I show you some adjustments to make so you can achieve the look at home. :)

She's using a clip to hold the front portion in place. Teasing at the crown. 

*NOTE* I want to talk about teasing. Not everyone knows how to properly tease their hair. I'll be doing a video soon explaining how to do it... it's easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

After smoothing over the tease, Mallory puts the remaining hair (Not the hair in the clip) into a secure (tight) ponytail. 

Now she takes the hair from the clip and "drapes" it back to wrap it completely around the pony tail and securing it with bobby pins. Then smoothing out the pony by brushing it.

 Here's the finished look! I think its a very sweet look and should take about 10 minutes if your hair is already curled.

*Note* for a more dramatic bump, tease more. :)

The Grand Bouffant

This DIY hairstyle comes from ModCloth.com's blog. It's fabulously called "The Grand Bouffant" and it is GRAND! 

 

It's a great tutorial and the instructions are easy to follow! 

 Here is my cousin, Genna (not a hair stylist or a model) recreating the look based on ONLY the instructions given in the tutorial:

 1. Checking out the instructions from ModCloth.

2.Sectioning off the front of her hair.

3. Twisting it to keep it from mixing with the rest.

4. Section off a 1" thick panel of hair at your crown and tease. *Teasing Tip* Always try to keep the "nest" close to your scalp. Remember to push it down. 

5. Here is an image the 1" thick panel of hair. Genna is pushing the "nest" close to her scalp.

6. She twist that section

7. and ties it into a little bun, securing it with bobby pins. *TIP* Make sure the bun is secured close to your scalp. Remember you have to be able to cover it with the hair from your first section. 

8. Lay the hair from the first section over the bun, and check with hand held mirror to make sure your bun is hidden.

 

9. Secure that hair with bobby pins.

10. & 11. pull any excess hair towards the back and secure with more bobby pins. 

12. Finish off with plenty of hair spray.

13. Finished look from the side.

14. Finished look from the back.

15. Finished look from the front. Beautiful!

This is a great tutorial and it only takes about 15 minutes! Easy to do and very pretty. Perfect look for work!

The Not So "Fun Bun"

This is a DIY Hair Tutorial that's been circulating on Pinterest.com for a while now and it's one of my most commonly pinned pins. I tried it myself, did exactly what the pictures instructed me to do, and it looked terrible. That's what gave me the idea to write reviews of these Hair Tutorials. I've been a hairstylist for 3 years now and I think I can give you a few tips on how to make these looks easier to accomplish on your own. 

First we have a lovely demonstration by my friend Emily Dawson (not a professional hair stylist or model) attempting to recreate the look with out any instruction from me. 

 

Not such a fun bun is it? Maybe it should be called the "dumb bun" (sorry, that was cheesy, couldn't resist). Let me show you a few easy adjustments to make, so you can have an actual "fun bun."

 Here we go...

 Pull when making your starter bun, make sure it's small. Only pull out a little bit. Leaving a lot of hair out. 

Make sure the hair you've left out is laying flat on the BACK of your head. Pull the bun on either side, just a little, to give it this fan shape. 

Push the bun down to your crown with your hand and using HAIR PINS (NOT BOBBY PINS) and pin the bun securely to your head. This should take between 3 and 4 hair pins. 

Split the hair that's left out in two and roll them with your fingers. Wrap them around the bun ONE AT A TIME, securing them with hair pins along the way and spraying them with EXTRA FIRM hair spray.

We’ve all seen these fun, DIY Hair Tutorials floating around all over the internet. They look so cute and seem like they are so easy! Just 6-8 images of a model doing what seems like easy little steps. Yeah. Have you ever tried one? I am a professional and licensed hair stylist and a lot of these tutorials were difficult even for me.

I’ve decided to help you all out with these tutorials. Each week, I’ll pick a new tutorial, attempt to replicate the steps exactly as they are shown and show you the finished product. If the tutorial is misleading or doesn’t quite come out the way it should, I will demonstrate how to adjust the steps so you can get the look at home.
